Call for paper on 'Marxism and IPE'!‏

Workshop on 'International Political Economy and Historical Materialism:further strange neglect?'
to be held at the Centre for the Study of Social and Global Justice (CSSGJ), University of Nottingham, 10 July 2009.
Since its emergence in the 1970s the self-image of International Political Economy (IPE) as a discipline has been based around a well-established set of concerns, expressed in the form of substantive policy-making and knowledge production issues. Simultaneously, a whole range of different historical materialist strands emerged over the same time frame, building on, but also going beyond the usual invocation of 'structuralism'. However, despite these advances in historical materialism in areas as diverse as the origins of the states-system, US hegemony and geopolitical conflict, regional integration, feminist theory, postcolonialism, and financial order, there has been a remarkable neglect of these findings from mainstream IPE. In fact, historical materialism has regularly been overlooked or simply dismissed on the basis of a posited 'economism'. In response to this neglect, this one-day workshop, to be held at the Centre for the Study of Social and Global Justice (CSSGJ), will coalesce 25 academics from a variety of theoretical perspectives to discuss the future of historical materialism within and beyond IPE. In particular, we are interested in the following two types of paper proposals: * a discussion of how a historical materialist approach can help us to understand international political economy with a conceptual and/or empirical focus; * a critical engagement with historical materialism and its contributions to IPE from other perspectives including social constructivism, post-structuralism, feminist theory, postcolonialism etc. again with a conceptual and/or empirical focus; There are no registration fees and lunch as well as coffee breaks are provided free of charge. Moreover, there are four travel grants of up to £150 each for Ph.D. students, whose paper proposal has been accepted.
