The Association of South-East Asian Studies in the United Kingdom(ASEASUK) will be holding its 40th annual conference at SwanseaUniversity, from 11th-13th September 2009. The panel on Migration and Security is open for paper proposals; closingdate is 14 April. Those interested in participating are encouraged tocontact the panel organisers: Alan Collins (Swansea University) A.Collins@swansea.ac.ukNicola Piper (Swansea University) N.Piper@Swansea.ac.uk Description of Panel theme:With the end of the Cold War and the re-envisaging of security, withthreats now perceived to emanate from a number of non-traditionalsources, a space has been created for rethinking the relationshipbetween migration and security. Migration can pose a threat to thepeople and governments of both the sending and receiving states. It canthreaten state security by turning civil conflicts into internationalconflicts as tensions cross borders and it facilitate the spread ofterrorism. Migration can though also pose threats at the human level bycausing economic hardship and threatening cultural identities andsocietal cohesion. In this panel we want to not just examine the typesof threats that migration can cause, and to whom they cause them, butalso whether thinking about migration in security terms is itself acause of insecurity.
