Το Πρόγραμμα Μεταπτυχιακών Σπουδών του Τμήματος Βαλκανικών Σπουδών «Οικονομική και Πολιτική Διακυβέρνηση στη Ν.Α.Ευρώπη», προκειμένου να ανταποκριθεί στο ενδιαφέρον των υποψηφίων μεταπτυχιακών φοιτητών, οι οποίοι
α) είτε κατέχουν δίπλωμα μικρότερου επιπέδου ως απόδειξη επάρκειας μιας εκ των τριών δυτικοευρωπαϊκών γλωσσών (αγγλικής, γαλλικής, γερμανικής) από εκείνα που ορίζονται στην προκήρυξη του Προγράμματος Μεταπτυχιακών Σπουδών για το τρέχον ακαδημαϊκό έτος 2009-10,
β) είτε έχει παρέλθει δεκαετία από την απόκτηση του σχετικού διπλώματος μιας εκ των τριών δυτικοευρωπαϊκών γλωσσών (αγγλικής, γαλλικής, γερμανικής),
γ) είτε δεν κατέχουν κάποιο σχετικό δίπλωμα μιας εκ των τριών δυτικοευρωπαϊκών γλωσσών (αγγλικής, γαλλικής, γερμανικής),

παρατείνει την προθεσμία κατάθεσης των σχετικών δικαιολογητικών μέχρι τις 9.10.2009 για όλες τις παραπάνω περιπτώσεις υποψηφίων. Θα ακολουθήσει σχετική γραπτή εξέταση στην αιτούμενη δυτικοευρωπαϊκή γλώσσα και η επιτυχής της έκβαση θα δώσει τη δυνατότητα στους υποψηφίους μεταπτυχιακούς φοιτητές να συμμετάσχουν στη δεύτερη φάση εξετάσεων των δύο οριζομένων μαθημάτων από την προκήρυξη του Προγράμματος Μεταπτυχιακών Σπουδών «Πολιτική Επιστήμη» και «Διεθνείς Οικονομικές Σχέσεις».

Lady Monica Cockfield Memorial Trust Scholarship for a PhD in European Studies Every year the University of Salford offers a number of Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTAs) for suitably qualified candidates wishing to study for a PhD. The European Studies Research Institute is very happy to announce that it is in a position to also advertise for an extra Lady Monica Cockfield Memorial Trust PhD scholarship in European studies (after we appointed our first Cockfield PhD student in April 2009) with the aim of providing a student from a low-income background the chance of studying for a PhD on the European Union. Applications are now invited for PhD study based in the European Studies Research Institute (ESRI). The PhD scholarship is worth £12,000 per annum over three years and is open to UK/EU students. The closing dates for applications is 10 August 09. The earliest registration date for the successful applicant is September 2009. Etymologically, the word translation is linked, among other things, to “tradition” on the one hand and to “betrayal” on the other. ... And yet the word tradition itself, linked in its roots to translation and betrayal, has to do with handing over. Tradition itself is nothing if it is not a transmission. How is tradition to be transmitted, to be passed on, if not through translation? (Rey Chow)

For this free interdisciplinary conference, we invite proposals on problematics of:

Intercultural encounters
Translation between cultures
Postcolonialism and the politics of translation
Diaspora, migration, mobility and cultural practices
Ethnicity, language, representation and cultural identity
Theories and practices of cultural translation
Tradition, transmission, translation and problems of origins
Re-examining the assumptions of translation

BISA: Conference 2009 Draft Programme‏

Dear Colleagues, The BISA Conference Committee has now finalised the draft programme for the 2009 Conference at the University of Leicester. We had a large number of panel and paper submissions this year and the Conference Committee had to reject a number of paper submissions for various reasons. We added papers to several existing panels in order to include as many paper proposals as possible and constructed a number of panels out of the many orphan paper proposals we received. In addition to the guidelines already issued at the time of the call for papers, the decisions of the Conference Committee were also informed by the following considerations (in no particular order): 1. The relevance and timeliness of the subject of the panel/paper;2. The configuration of the panel - mix of lecturers/Profs, PhDs; mix of institutional affiliation, participation of activists/NGO reps/ officials etc.;3. Papers/ panels representing new work not previously published; 4. Equitable inclusion of the work of the BISA Working Groups. In the end the Committee believes that we have put in place an interesting and varied programme that is as inclusive as possible and certainly representative of the academic interests and expertise of the current membership. Bio/Geo Politics of Religion Seminar (NYC)

2009-10 Seminar at Macaulay Honors College at CUNYNew York, NY Bio/Geo Politics of ReligionCo-Directors: Lee Quinby and Sylvia Tomasch Macaulay Honors College at CUNY invites applications from New York area faculty and doctoral students for the second annual Macaulay Seminar to be held during the 2009-10 academic year. The Macaulay Seminar seeks to generate lively discussion on a topic vital to our time, to enrich teaching, and to help facilitate research toward publication. The seminar will meet once per month on Monday evenings throughout the year. Each member of the seminar will be expected to participate fully in the Seminar and present a paper at the conference on the same topic to be held April 16-18, 2010 at Macaulay. Participants will be selected from departments across academic divisions to encourage wide-ranging discussion. All full-time faculty members and graduate students are eligible. (Other interested parties are welcome to apply.) A stipend of $750 will be awarded to participants. This seminar will explore what Michel Foucault called “biopolitics,” the relations of power that focus on the management of life, with specific regard to organized religions and practices of religious conduct. Although recently religion has been widely recognized as a leading force in contemporary life, with movements of both faith-based solidarity and conflict being played out on the world stage, the present context has a long history through which these movements may be understood. Relevant topics might include themes of apocalypticism and millennialism, the economics of evangelicalism, fundamentalist movements over time and space, the policing of bodies and souls, textual literalism and interpretation, bio- and geo-political conjunctions, manuals of guidance and techniques of surveillance, utopian religious communities in life and literature, and connections between ecos, bios, power, and justice. Readings will be selected to accommodate the specific interests and expertise of the participants. Co-Directors: Lee Quinby is the inaugural Visiting Professor at Macaulay Honors College at the City University of New York City. The author of three books, Millennial Seduction (1999), Anti-Apocalypse (1994), and Freedom, Foucault, and the Subject of America (1991), she is also editor of Genealogy and Literature (1995) and co-editor of Feminism and Foucault (1988) and Gender and Apocalyptic Desire (2006). Sylvia Tomasch is Associate University Dean of Academic Affairs at Macaulay HonorsCollege and Professor of English at Hunter College, both in the City University of New York.
