Department of Politics at the University of Stirling (Scotland, UK) invites applications for its MSc in International Conflicts and Cooperation, starting in September 2009 (full academic year).
The programme consists of two compulsory courses (modules) in Autumn Semester: International Conflicts & Cooperation Analysis and International Organisations, as well as two optional modules in Spring Semester. Courses we offer in Spring Semester include: Conflicts and Cooperation in the Balkans, EU-Russian Relations and the Southern Caucasus; Conflicts in Independent Africa, and Conflicts in Middle East. The Research Methods course is also a compulsory component to this programme.
The Department of Politics at Stirling has very strong expertise in these areas and aims at attracting international students interested in conflict resolution and analysis.

THE FINANCIAL CRISIS: RESPONSES AND IMPLICATIONS IN EUROPE
Europe is experiencing its most serious financial crisis since the Great Depression. The response of the EU and member states to this crisis has been paradoxical. The crisis has discredited the 'Anglo-American' model of finance-led capitalism and gravely weakened the American imperium. Yet, the countries of Europe have been unable either individually or collectively to devise a concerted regional solution to the crisis. The result has been rising unemployment, the intensification of intra-regional disparities and signs of inter-state rivalries, and it is likely to result in growing poverty. Notwithstanding the deployment of massive resources to failing banks, the EU and member states continue to pursue the main planks of the neoliberal agenda, including labour market reforms, privatisation and financialisation. This session seeks to address the prospects for a European alternative to U.S.-led neoliberalism. Addressing the theme of this conference, we aim to consider to what extent does the current crisis unite or divide Europe and prospective allies in the world order, and what are its implications for the European project of integration. We invite papers which consider at least one of the following:
* The limits and contradictions of the mode of development currently in crisis, which may enable us to understand the current conjuncture.
* The problem of translating intellectual criticism into policy prescription or alternative strategies.
* The political consequences of the crisis, its implications for political strategies pursued in relation to the 'European Model' as well as to the regulatory frameworks on national and sub-national levels.
* The issue of contemporary social and political mobilisation and attendant effects on the 'limits of the possible'.

Aleksanteri Institute's Visiting Fellowhips 2009-2010
The Aleksanteri Institute is pleased to invite applications forAleksanteri Visiting Fellowships for the 2009-2010 academic year fromscholars holding a PhD degree and pursuing research that relates tothe Institute's research agenda. The Fellowship carries a monthlystipend of 2200 euros to cover all the expenses related to theresearch visit that can range from two to six months. Twice a year, Cedefop ( European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training), http://www.cedefop.europa.eu/ offers five-month periods of in-service training for young university graduates or public sector employees from the Member States of the European Union and a number of nationals of non-member countries. These training periods involve work experience in one of the departments of Cedefop. They start on 1 March and 1 September each year.
Trainees may spend part of the period preparing a postgraduate thesis or an academic paper.
Admission to in-service training does not confer on trainees the status of officials or other servants of the Communities. Nor does it entitle them to appointment by Cedefop or any other EU institution or body. Trainees may not be awarded any contract of employment with the institution or body in which they completed their in-service training for one year after its termination.
Trainees are selected from among nationals of the Member States of the European Communities.
In-service training at Cedefop is open to candidates:
who have completed by the closing date for applications a course of university education and obtained a full degree or its equivalent (for minimum national education requirements, or
are public sector employees, provided they have a university degree or equivalent diploma or have been engaged in advisory duties for at least three years.
A training grant may be awarded to the trainee. The number of grants depends on the availability of funds in the budget. The grant is currently EUR 800 per month. Travelling expenses (within certain limits) are also reimbursed.
